Chapter 3 Cultures

DOI: 10.4324/9781315024097-4

This chapter explores various ethnographic approaches to culture within border modernism. In her Southwestern fiction (The Song of the Lark, The Professor’s House, and Death Comes for the Archbishop), Willa Cather engages with theories of cultural evolutionism, cultural relativism, and cultural borderlands to arrive at a syncretic vision of culture. In contrast, Américo Paredes’s George Washington Gómez depicts the Southwestern borderlands as a space of cultural conflict—armed, linguistic, and ideological. As a comparison of these works suggests, synthetic visions of the borderlands must continually address the historical conditions that produce cultural conflict and difference or risk presenting a model of unanalyzed repetition rather than a model of historical change.
